ALEXANDRE CHARPENTIER ART NOUVEU TABLE
This is a rare and exquisite table by a great sculptor, medalist, and cabinet maker, Alexandre Charpentier, who was active in France from the late 18,00's to the early 20th century. Most of his work was commissioned, and there are examples in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, but very few of his pieces ever came onto the market.
The table is kidney-shaped wood, with a fabulous sculpted inlaid panel in pewter with twining fish and figures, and is signed in the pewter. We have never seen another piece of his for sale. Despite the somewhat intricate subject of the sculpture, the table itself is quite simple, and makes a lovely coffee table.
