Glass has always been of special interest to us. Its qualities of plasticity and light transmission make it one of the most expressive mediums for artists to work with. Experimentation with new ways of working with glass began thousands of years ago, and continues through today. Amazingly, new techniques are still being discovered and explored.
Our glass collection spans three centuries, and many countries and styles. The late 19th and early 20th century saw the evolution of Art Nouveau. In France, Emile Galle, Daum Nancy, and Rene Lalique began producing beautiful, lyrical pieces in glass that reflected the influences of Japanese art and Naturalism. Emile Decorchemont and Argy-Rousseau were foremost among the artists who worked with pate-de-verre. In the United States, Louis Comfort Tiffany was experimenting with ways to reproduce the iridescent surfaces and textures of ancient glass. Loetz, in Austria, used iridescent surface decorations on organic forms to produce their own, very distinctive works.
The 1920's saw many innovations in glass techniques. In France, Maurice Marinot was one of the great glass experimenters. He worked with metallic inclusions, air bubbles and deeply acid-etched designs. He greatly influenced the work of Andre Thuret, Henri Navarre, Jean Luce and the firm of Daum Nancy.
Perhaps the most important country to produce great glass artists was Italy. The island of Murano, in Venice, has for many centuries produced exceptional glass. Work done in Murano during the 20th century is extra-ordinary for it's quality, variety and artistry. Our collection includes works by Scarpa, Bianconi, Venini, Barovier, Martinuzzi, and virtually every important glass artist to work in Murano in the 20th century.
The pieces shown on our site are a small part of our extensive collection of glass from 1900 - today. If you are looking for particular pieces, please let us know - we greatly enjoy working with collectors on every level. We are also interested in purchasing single pieces or entire collections of high-quality pieces.
